Bio: Tanzcompagnie R u b a t o The Berlin based dance company Rubato was founded in 1985 by Jutta Hell and Dieter Baumann. Up to this day Rubato has developed more then 50 full – length pieces in various artistic constellations and cultures and presented them in numerous tours around the world. 1990 to 1992 Rubato worked with Gerhard Bohner (one of the most important dance artist in Germany for a new approach to contemporary choreography in the 80 and 90) and received the „Award for performing Art“ by Akademie der Künste, Berlin in 1992. Since 1995 Rubato has regulary worked and co-produced in China (Guangdong, Peking, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yunna Province). Beside other productions, the international project „Duty Free“(2001) has been produced with dancers from China, Estonia, Canada and Germany. „America! Question“ (2004) a piece with six US dancers produced in the USA and toured in Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, Boston, New York. In 2005 Rubato created two commissioned pieces for the „House of World Cultures“ in Berlin, Shanghai Beauty, a piece with 14 chinese dancers and Eidos_Tao. Shanghai Beauty toured in 2006 world wide and was the most successful piece in Switzeland during the „Steps 2006“ Festival. A generous grant from the Cultural Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany made it from 2009 to 2010 possible, to create a work with six independent young chinese dancers / choreographers from Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai: LOOK AT ME, I´M CHINESE. The piece was successfully premiered 2010 in Berlin, at the prestigious international dance festival: TANZ IM AUGUST. In 2011 MILK&BREAD / RICE&WATER was produced in Shanghai and Berlin and connected three chinese dancers and three western dancer. “THE SWATCH ART PEACE HOTEL GUEST RESIDENCY PROGRAM” has invited Jutta Hell and Dieter Baumann as first dancers / choreographers to join the residency program from December 2012 until March 2013. In 2013 and 2014 Rubato will receive again a 2 years grant from the „cultural department, city of Berlin“.
